Traders launched their stores to much excitement on Thursday, March 17, with council leader Jane Mudd cutting the ribbon to officially open the market. You can read more about the launch here.

The revamp, which cost between five and six million pounds courtesy of developers Loft Co, is the largest market development in Europe. It includes a food court and bar on the ground floor, 70 workspaces, refurbished market stalls, a gym and a rooftop garden.

Featuring some familiar names from the old market as well as loads of exciting new traders including Friends in Knead, Seven Lucky Gods and Flour & Ash, the building’s long-awaited reopening marks the end of a long battle to secure its long-term future following years of decline.

While the ground floor is home to food outlets and traditional shops, lifestyle units on the market’s mezzanine first floor will also include spaces for barbers, hairdressers, nail bars, podiatrists and physiotherapists. There are also a number of returning favourites like Friendly Neighbourhood Comics and Rae Barton Fruit and Veg.

Plans to revamp the market have been ongoing for around a decade. In April 2012, a £750,000 refurbishment scheme was approved by the Welsh Government to upgrade and improve the layout and facilities.

The new market has many in Newport reminiscing about the old days of the market and how far it has come. Originally opened in 1854, the market has been central to Newport life for over 150 years.

Here’s some pictures showing just how different the new market is compared to its previous look
