An online fundraiser for the family of a taxi driver killed in Oshawa is halfway toward its goal.

Durham police say the man was found injured beside his vehicle Friday afternoon, near King Street and Central Park Boulevard. He was pronounced dead in hospital.

One person was arrested nearby.

Police have yet to officially identify either the suspect or the victim.

“My uncle went to work as a taxi driver on January 21 to support his family in these hard COVID times and his life was tragically taken,” wrote Christina Young, who is organizing the fundraiser. “He was a proud father to my two cousins and always wanted the best life for them. They are both in university and striving to succeed in life and I don’t want this horrific incident to stop their education.”

As of Sunday morning, the GoFundMe had raised more than $15,000 of its $25,000 goal.

The page states that donations will go toward funeral expenses and the children’s education.
