The Executive Chairman of the Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board(RSUBEB), Ven Fyneface Akah has advocated for an integrative teaching curriculum system for mission schools in the country, in order to effectively realise the objectives for which they were established.
He also called on churches which owned the mission schools to develop ownership content of governance so as to fill in the gap in infrastructural needs in the schools.
Akah stated this while delivering a lecture on the theme, “For God And Truth: Redefining the New Mission”, during the 2022 Dinner/Lecture to mark the inauguration of the nine members’ new National Executive of Baptist High School, Port Harcourt Old Students’ Association in Port Harcourt, over the weekend.
He said that the church was not only called for gospel evangelism alone but also in the work of charity, which include forming and moulding of intellectual character for acquisition of both literacy, numerical and skills through establishment of mission schools.
According to him, the integrative model curriculum system was an inclusion of the secular education curriculum with an introduction of God and truth in every content of subjects being taught in the schools.
“If a teacher is teaching Mathematics, English Language or any subject, let the student see something beyond the subject being taught. God and truth content must be added. The church is called to be the hope and light of the world, and should manifest this in their various mission institutions”, he stated.
Akah described the old boys as primary stakeholders, and should be sensitised on the need to give back to the institution that formed and moulded them.
“They have the role to stand with the mission schools in the areas of infrastructure development and be part of what is done to impartChristian character to students who succeeded them.”
Also speaking, the immediate past National President of Baptist High School, Port Harcourt Old Students’ Association,Barrister Karibi George, listed the achievements recorded by his administration to include, among other things, membership drive, formation of committees, mentoring, while business development committee organised three years career and social skills enhancement programme for current students of the collegeas well as holding dinner parties, among others.
He expressed confidence that the new leadership would be successful, adding that most members of the new leadership were part of his administration.
In his acceptance speech, the newly inaugurated National President of the nine-member executive committee, BHSPHOSA,Henshelson Ejiofor expressed gratitude to members of the association for the confidence placed on their shoulders, and promised that they would justify the confidence placed in them.
He outlined six points agenda for his administration, which include consolidation of life assurance policy for members, institution of health insurance scheme, BHS co-operative society formation, membership drive, effective constitution for BHS and empowerment through improved welfare scheme.
Highlight of the event is the commissioning of a building reconstructed by the Chairman,Board of Trustees (BHSPHOSA), Sir Jimmy Coker, while various awards were given to members for their contributions to the development of the school.
