Work will start on or about Feb. 28, according to the state Department of Transportation. The highway will be closed for about six months at the location, with reopening set for Labor Day.

Most vehicles will be detoured over Saltvale Road. A separate, 30-mile truck detour will use routes 63, 36, 39/20A and 19A. NY-63, NY-36, NY-39/20A and NY-19A.

Local traffic will have access to NY-19 on both sides of the bridge — about a half-mile north of the Walmart plaza — up to the construction zone, DOT officials said.

The old-style truss bridge was built in 1937. It’s reaching the end of its useful life.

The bridge will be replaced with a single-span, hybrid steel multi-girder superstructure. The new span will feature wider shoulders for enhanced safety, and will better accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians.

The project’s expected to cost about $4.18 million, according to the DOT website. It will be paid for through state and federal funding, with no local funding sources.
